Kulla Dragobi
Heritage Living On.
Kulla Dragobi reinterprets the typology of the Albanian kulla through a contemporary and sustainable architectural language, deeply rooted in the context of the Valbona Valley.
The project establishes a natural dialogue between tradition and modern living, where architecture does not impose itself, but rather coexists harmoniously with the alpine landscape. The complex is composed of the main tower and accompanying structures, constructed using local materials—stone, wood, and copper—selected for their durability, functionality, and authentic connection to place. The treatment of volumes, openings, and architectural details preserves the historic identity of the kulla, while allowing generous natural light and contemporary living standards.
At the heart of the project lies the traditional organization of life: the tower, the barn, the hearth house, and the spring form a self-sustaining unit that reflects the close relationship between family, nature, and agricultural activity in the Albanian Alps. Each element is carefully designed to maintain a balance between culture, function, and landscape, creating spaces that are as much felt as they are seen.
Kulla Dragobi demonstrates that cultural heritage does not belong solely to the past. Through materiality, form, and spatial composition, the project shows how traditional architecture can evolve naturally and remain an active part of a modern, sustainable way of living—deeply connected to its place.
